Settlers Park, a painting that will be hanging in the Community Center for the next few months. |
Met with Susie (surgeon) yesterday morning and she tool the steri strips off my neck and is VERY pleased with the way things are healing in just four days. No more Frankenstein neck and you really can't tell I had surgery since it is in my old thyroid scar. The plan is to continue seeing her every three months.
The next step was Jenny's (oncologist) office. We went over some details of my cancer. It is moderately active - not aggressive and not slow. The nodule Susie did the frozen section on was visibly "not normal". I have no active cancer cells - meaning the tumor has been removed. I still consider the guys they keep finding in my nodules cancer cells but they fit in another category. She still doesn't have a plan for me yet (chemo or chemo/radiation) and doesn't feel there is a hurry. The chemo I will get will be 4 cycles of 21 days. Drugs to be determined. I will probably be eligible for a trial using Avastin along with chemo. This is a drug that would stop the development of new blood vessels so the remaining cancer cells wouldn't be able to get an appropriate blood supply. This would continue for a year.
Next stop is the radiology oncologist's office on Monday. In the past studies showed that radiology really didn't help a lot but some of the studies were flawed. The most recent study, which was small, disproved the previous studies and would be the most aggressive way to go. We have questions to ask about this form of treatment and because there is controversy around the treatment, we have decided to get a second opinion. Jenny gave us the names of two lung specialists in Denver and we will set that up on Monday.
This has been disappointing. I had expected to get a plan and be ready to move forward soon. It is serious stuff so I guess I should be happy they aren't in a big hurry to move forward,
The big news they both gave me was GO MEET ALICE! Make sure I use hand sanitizers all the time and I should be good with traveling. Here I come baby face - hope you are really on your way, too. So do your parents!
