Another dark, moonless night and the coyotes and dogs are having a conversation. It doesn't sound good and this is the second night of them doing this near-by. Poor Orion, I don't want to let him out after dark now. He won't hear them and I'm not sure he knows that coyotes aren't always friendly - altho his cousin brought one home to my sister's one night. She didn't let Violet keep it. Someone has shot two recently and nobody knows who or why. I may know the why, now.
The light pollution in the picture is coming from Denver.
You might not know that the coyotes have killed a number of dogs around here so you're right to protect Orion from them. They use a luring method, where one appears playful, drawing the dog toward him. Then, the rest of the pack descends on the dog.
ReplyDeleteI'd never shoot a coyote over it but we never let our dogs out at night off-leash, and we scan the meadows for them before letting the dogs wander along with us off-leash. We've practiced recalls a zillion times in the meadows so that our dogs will come back if that fateful luring coyote appears...
One more thing - so you don't get too worried - our wildlife cams show up to 5 coyotes on our property at a time, almost every night. Yet, we haven't had any coyote incidents. If we just open a door, the coyotes flee.
Thanks for that feedback. I have just discovered people have left comments for me.
